I understand that screwing commuters and farmers are a moral directive coming from a guy who works from home, but the basic treatment of workers supersedes this grim reality.

Two of largest railroad carriers, Union Pacific + BNSF (subsidiary of Bershire Hathaway), have attendance policies that penalize workers, up to firing, for going to the dr & attending to family emergencies.

BNSF and Union Pacific primarily operate in the western US.
U.S. refineries produce "BOB", or the petroleum component of motor gasoline, that is below retail pump octane specifications i.e. 85 rather than 87 regular. That missing octane is supplied by ethanol. pic.twitter.com/pcG7BHj1N4

Ethanol is only added to gasoline at regional distribution terminals just prior to it being delivered to a retail station. These distribution terminals are all over the country and hold ethanol in inventory - which will become critical in event of a rail strike. pic.twitter.com/iUKLVZvp0d

So in the event of a rail strike and ethanol supply disruption, your motor gasoline would be sub-octane (not great) and you'd be missing 1/10th of every gallon.

What Does a Railroad Strike Mean For Shipping?
— Sal Mercogliano (WGOW Shipping) 🚢⚓🐪🚒🏴☠️ (@mercoglianos) September 12, 2022
The potential of a strike by all Class I #railroads on Sept 16 has massive implications for global #shipping, #ports & #supplychain as cited by @loriannlarocco & @rrpre in their great articles.https://t.co/xlgHZRTqqC via @YouTube
Emerging impacts of potential rail shutdown:
— Jeff Stein (@JStein_WaPo) September 14, 2022
- Amtrak cancels long-distance trips
- Ammonia, fertilizer, ag products pulled from trains
- Price of ethanol, other products soars
- Grain shipments could stop tomorrow
“If rail shuts down, our entire agricultural system shuts down"
Amtrak Canceling All Long Distance Service Ahead of Strike - it would be the first national railroad strike in 30 years
